News - Pie Awards 2023

With over 900 entries and 140 judges reviewing, tasting and judging their way through them, selecting the winners of the British Pie Awards is always going to be a delicious but difficult task. This year was no exception; HSSP Architects sponsored the ‘Pasty’ Class, which proved to have the highest number of entries ever in 2023.

Even the snow which draped the land and closed local roads could not dampen the awards proceedings, with attendees coming to the lunch from all over the country eager to find out who was to be crowned.

Ros attended the awards on behalf of HSSP to present the trophy to the winning pasty for our class, which went to the ‘Keema Pasty’ made by The Butcher and The Baker Ltd. Nick Cooper one of the directors of HSSP and a judge for this category commented afterwards that “The pasty looked and tasted fabulous and was a clear winner.” Hot on its heels were ‘Ginsters Cornish Pasty’ and ‘MUD Food’s Dinosaur Pasty’ who received Highly Commended certificates.

Also on Ros’s table was the winner of the ‘Dessert Pie’ Class which went to Boghall Butchers for their ‘Traditional Bramley Apple Pie’, the winner of the ‘Pork Pie’ Class which saw Leeson’s Butchers scooping the trophy for their ‘Melton Mowbray Pork Pie’, and a Highly Commended being awarded to The Crown Hawk Green for their ‘Chicken Ham & Leek Pie’ in the ‘Pub Pie’ Class.

Much supportive cheering and celebrating ensued on the table, with Boghall Butchers knowing they are going to be making the pies for next year’s awards lunch dessert!

The prestigious ‘Supreme Champion’ of the awards went to Brockleby’s Pies based in our home town of Melton Mowbray for their ‘Moo & Blue’ steak and stilton pie which had triumphed in the ‘Hot-Eating Savoury Pie’ Class.

We give our congratulations to all the winners and the recipients of the Highly Commended awards and applaud everyone for taking part in such a fiercely contested competition.
